Sambalpur: A baby girl allegedly sold by a couple for Rs 15000 was rescued by police from Rairakhol area in Sambalpur district on Wednesday morning.

The baby, aged one month and seven days, was rescued by Charmal police after a complaint was lodged by the Childline members in this regard.

According to sources, the couple who hails from Keutibahal village under Charmal police limits had sold the baby to another couple for Rs 15000.

"During the investigation, we traced the child’s mother who later revealed the names of the buyer," said Padmalochan Bentakar, Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI), Charmal Police Station.

"We learnt about the sale of a baby girl and after contacting the Anganwadi and Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) members, rescued her," stated Sanjaya Sagar, Childline team leader.

The police have detained the couple who had purchased the child.

"We bought the baby as we are childless. We had prepared documents for the same," stated Lalit Pradhan, the person who had bought the newborn.

Further investigation into the matter is underway and the infant is currently in the custody of the Rairakhol police.
