Berhampur: A pregnant woman and her niece died after reportedly being knocked down by an unidentified vehicle at K Lachmanpalli in Aska area of Ganjam district on Monday morning.

The deceased has been identified as Rashmita Parida and her niece Asha Rani Khanduala.

According to sources, the accident took place near K Lachmanpalli on Aska-Kabisuryanagar main road when the duo was out on a morning walk. An unknown vehicle hit them killing Rashmita on the spot, while Asha died while undergoing treatment at Aska hospital.

The vehicle driver fled the spot after the mishap, sources informed adding that, Lagnajit Parida, 10-year-old nephew of Rashmita, who was also out on morning walk, escaped unhurt in the mishap.

“At around 5 am, Rashmita along with her nephew and niece went for a morning walk. Later, we were informed that Rashmita and Asha are lying unconscious on the road. We took them to hospital where Rashmita was declared brought dead,” said a relative of the deceased.

On being informed about the incident, police reached the spot and started an investigation into the matter.
