New Delhi/Bhubaneswar: Girish Chandra Murmu’s appointment as the new Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India is another noteworthy feat in the elite list of Odias spearheading crucial roles in the government of India.

A 1985 batch IAS officer of the Gujarat cadre, Murmu was Principal Secretary to Narendra Modi when he was Chief Minister of Gujarat. He became the first Lt Governor of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir after the historic abrogation of Article 370.

Like him, there are several Odia officers adorning top posts in several ministries and departments. 1972 batch IAS officer of Gujarat cadre, PK Mishra who hails from Odisha is currently heading the position of Principal Secretary at PMO since September 2019. He served in many vital positions under the Gujarat government led by Narendra Modi.

Similarly, another Odia, Shaktikant Das has been serving as the Governor of Reserve Bank of India since December 2018. A 1970 batch IAS officer of Tamil Nadu cadre, Das was deputed to Centre on 2014 after Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister. He worked as Chief Secretary of various Ministries from Revenue to Finance and Fertilizer before taking in charge of the country's apex bank.

Among the Odias who made their way to the top from the bottom in the national arena, the figure of ‘Cyclone Man’ Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, the Director-General of Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) can never go unnoticed. His accurate prediction of innumerable natural disasters like cyclone Fani, Phailin, Amphan and Nisarga helped save countless lives in the country.

Complementing Mohapatra, there is another Odia man Satyanarayan Pradhan who is serving as the Director-General of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the frontline in India’s defence against natural calamities.
