Bhubaneswar: As many as six people were killed after being reportedly struck by lightning at several places in the State today.

According to sources, a total of 4 people were killed in lightning strikes in separate incidents in Keonjhar. One person each was killed in Rampas village under Nandipada police limits, Inchal & Sapua sahi in Ramchandrapur area. Similarly, the fourth one, stated to be a minor girl was killed in Pandua area.

One person was killed due to lightning while working on his field in Jaleswar Laxmananath area while a woman lost her life after being struck by a lightning while working in her house in Bhogarai area of Balasore.

IMD Met Centre in Bhubaneswar has issued warning of severe thunderstorm activities for several districts including Keonjhar and Balasore today.

Lightning is the biggest killer among all types of natural calamities in Odisha and claims hundreds of lives every year.

As per a report of the State Special Relief Commissioner, Odisha has witnessed a total of 3218 registered deaths due to lightning between 2011-12 and 2019-2020. The maximum of 340 deaths were reported from Mayurbhanj district during the period.

During the 2019-2020 annual year (upto February 2, 2020), a total of 281 people were killed in lightning.

In the year before that, as many as 334 people were charred to death by lightning. The year 2017-18 saw biggest number of lightning deaths during the past decade with at least 470 people losing their lives due to the natural calamity in the State.
