In the age of social media and internet, a singer becoming an overnight sensation is no big deal. However, when that singer is a young tribal girl from the remote Chintaguda village in Koraput district, it indeed is a big thing.

Namita Melka, who sings in Hindi, Odia and her native tribal language, rose to fame when two of her songs went viral on the internet. Since then social media has given her voice an identity which was muted otherwise.

“I have been singing since I was a child but I never thought this will bring me closer to the masses and help me receive so much love and attention” she said humbly.

The young talent thanks her teacher Bansidhara Halwa for getting all the recognition to her talent. She said “ I participated and won many competitions since I was in standard 10th  but none could give me the recognition which social media helped me to garner. It was because of my teacher Bansidhar Halwa who made me aware of the platform and helped my voice reach to the public.”

Namita’s family and he village is extremely supportive of her talent and wish for the right resources and platform for her to showcase her talent and make them proud. “She is a poor tribal girl but if she gets some support from the government we are sure she will go on to make our village and Koraput proud of her talent.” said one of the villagers.

Due to the lockdown, she has been getting ample time to brush up her singing skills and make videos for her online fans.  She is also using her melody to inform and educate people of  Koraput district about important issues.
