Koraput: In a major breakthrough, the district Police has busted an inter-State ganja smuggling racket and seized 322 kg of the contraband from near Shiva temple in Guneipada chhak here on Tuesday. Two peddlers reportedly residents of Raipur have also been arrested in this connection.

According to sources, based on information received regarding smuggling of the contraband from the Andhra borders, Koraput SP directed Nandapur SDPO to immediately look into the matter. As per the directive issued, a joint team of Machkund and Lamtaput Police launched patrolling in Guneipada area and intercepted the ganja-laden truck near Shiva temple late last night.

During the search, Police seized around 321.8 kg ganja stuffed in 16 bags, the value of which is estimated to be around Rs 30 lakh. Two peddlers - Bipin Mishra and Arun Dubey - were arrested on charges of smuggling the contraband.

Initial investigation reports suggest that the consignment was being transported from Enugu area in Andhra Pradesh to Uttar Pradesh via Lamtaput, Jeypore, and Raipur.

In another anti-Narcotics drive launched by Malkangiri district Police, around 621 kg ganja was seized by a team led by Chitrakonda Police Station SI NC Biswal following a raid on Sunday. Two persons were arrested and two mobile phones along with Rs 6100 cash was also seized from their possession, police said.

Prior to that, another team led by SI JPN Hota of Orkel Police Station had seized 89 Kg Ganja being transported on a motorcycle, and arrested two persons.

Lauding the efforts of the police, Odisha DGP Abhay said we are committed to combating drug trafficking in the State.
