Balasore: Hours after the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) formally announced its candidate for the upcoming by-elections to Balasore Sadar constituency, massive infighting and protest erupted in the area.

Thousands of supporters of district BJD president and former minister Rabindra Jena staged agitation outside his office near OT Road opposing the candidature of Swarup Kumar Das for Balasore Sadar.

A high drama continued for hours as Jena's supporters demanded the party leadership to rethink the decision of giving the ticket to a new face to contest for the crucial seat. They believe leaders like Rabindra Jena or his wife should be given a ticket, and if not, at least a deserving candidate who can lead.

If the decision is not changed, many people will tender resignation from the party, Jena's supporters threatened.

On the other hand, the former State minister has advised his supporters to have patience. "There is nothing like unhappy or happy. We cannot question the decision of the CM and BJD supremo. I think whatever decision has been taken is well-thought," Jena said.

Swarup Das after being selected for BJD party candidate from Balasore Sadar constituency said, “I was not in ticket race. It is the party’s decision and must have been taken through lots of deliberation with senior leaders and local opinion. There is no intraparty feud in Balasore. I would like to thank CM Naveen Pattnaik for imposing faith in me.”

As per the notification of the Election Commission of India (ECI), the by-election to the Balasore and Tirtol Assembly constituencies will be held on November 3 and counting is scheduled on the 11th.

The by-polls have been necessitated following the demise of two sitting legislators – BJP MLA Madan Mohan Dutta (Balasore) and BJD legislator Bishnu Das (Tirtol).
