Cuttack: Continuing its crackdown on crackers ahead of Diwali, Police on Saturday seized huge quantity of firecrackers and arrested one person from Cuttack.

Raid was conducted by the police on the firecracker manufacturing unit operating in Khannagar area of Cuttack town.

The arrested accused was identified as Yudhistir Nayak. He was booked under Section 9(b) I.E Act r/w and Section 5 of Odisha Fireworks and Loud Speaker (Regulation) Act and forwarded to a court.

Acting on a tip-off, a joint team of Badambadi Police and Special Squad raided the house of Nayak and recovered a huge amount of handmade firecrackers. Around 62 bundles of firecrackers containing 30 crackers each, 186 'ghadi' and 15 'sutuli' bombs were seized during the raid.

Earlier on Saturday, firecrackers worth around Rs 70 lakh were seized following a raid on an illegal manufacturing unit at Nalabanta village under Aska police limits in Ganjam district. Three persons involved in illegal manufacturing and selling the firecrackers were also arrested.

It is pertinent to mention that the Odisha government recently prohibited the sale and bursting of firecrackers between November 10 and November 30 in view of the COVID-19 pandemic situation.

Meanwhile, the Cuttack DCP has warned of strict action against those found involved in manufacturing and selling of crackers.
