Koraput: A joint team of BSF and Machkund Police on Wednesday intercepted a pick-up van near Hanumal village in the district and seized over 800 kg ganja worth Rs 80 lakh from the vehicle.

The BSF and t0he police were patrolling at a MVCP (mobile vehicle check post) near Hanumal village today when the officials grew suspicious after they saw the driver of the vehicle trying to hurry his way through the check post.

Later, when they signaled the van to stop, the driver and helper of the vehicle fled the spot leaving the van there, informed Nandpur Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Sanjay Kumar Mahapatra.

The officials subsequently searched the van and recovered 169 packets of ganja weighing more than 800 kg, a country gun and two rounds of bullet. The van was heading towards Chhattisgarh from Malkangiri, added the SDPO.

A manhunt has been launched to nab the two persons (driver and helper of the pickup van) involved in the smuggling. Further investigation in connection with the matter is underway by Machkund Police.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Commissionerate Police seized around 14 kg of ganja worth Rs 1 lakh from two expensive cars and arrested two peddlers in this connection near Bankuala under Saheed Nagar Police limits in Bhubaneswar. Cops also confiscated both the four wheelers used for the peddling.
