Dhenkanal: Police have arrested a woman for her alleged involvement in fake currency note racket in Hindol area of Dhenkanal district.

The arrested woman, Mamata Sahu is said to be a former Sarpanch of Bandhahuda panchayat in Narsinghpur area of Cuttack district.

According to sources, the woman lived in a rented house in Hindol area. She had gone to Hindol market last evening and purchased grocery items worth Rs 11,000. When she made the payment, the shop owner raised suspicious after touching the notes and informed the police.

Hindol police immediately reached the spot and took the woman into their custody and seized the fake notes. The woman was later arrested.

The police said the woman has admitted to trading fake notes during the questioning. The police will apply in a court to take the woman on remand for further questioning to find out the source of the fake notes and the racket working behind it.

Earlier this month, counterfeit currency notes with a face value of Rs 7.90 crore was seized by police at Sunki outpost under Pottangi police limits in Koraput district.

Patangi police had seized the fake notes when it was being transported to Chhattisgarh in a car by three persons. The three persons were arrested.
