Berhampur: Do you love to down a bottle of beer? Think twice and make sure that you check its expiry date before you purchase a bottle from the nearest liquor joint as old beer stocks (expired) are now being allegedly sold at various counters in Berhampur.

To verify such allegations, Berhampur Additional District Magistrate (ADM), Sweta Das turned up at a liquor counter posing as a customer.

Accepting claims that several liquor shops in the area are selling old stock Das said, “No doubt liquor is injurious to health, but sale of expired beer poses serious health hazards.”

Most of the beer stocks in two liquor shops were found to be old with many of them being sold 4 to 6 months beyond their expiry dates.

“We will report the matter to concerned officials of Odisha government for necessary action,” Das added.

Following the incident, police and officials of Excise department later conducted raids at other liquor shops in Berhampur.

Excise officials informed that the best before date of beer stock has been extended by a period of three months and the matter will be thoroughly probed.
