Bolangir: Tension ran high at Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital here after family members of a patient ransacked COVID-19 isolation centre and thrashed a doctor following his death due to alleged medical negligence on Saturday.

According to sources, the doctor sustained serious injuries in the attack and was admitted to the hospital.

“The patient died due to doctor’s negligence. Even if he tested COVID-19 negative, the doctor admitted him to the hospital which resulted in his death,” a family member of the deceased alleged.

Refuting the accusation, Bhima Bhoi MCH assistant superintendent Prabhat Kumar Rath said, “There was no medical negligence. We conducted the patient’s antigen test and immediate treatment was provided to him.”

“The government must ensure safety to the doctors. We demand stern action against those who have attacked our staff,” Rath added.

Meanwhile, the doctors and health workers at the medical institute sat on a dharna protesting against the attack.

“We demand the immediate arrest of the culprits. Charges should be framed against them under NSA Act. Moreover, we demand that only patient should be allowed to COVID-19 isolation ward,” a protesting doctor demanded.
