Kandhamal: At a time when allegations of mismanagement in COVID-19 quarantine centres continue to surface in Odisha, a youth allegedly killed himself in a COVID Care facility in Kandhamal district on Saturday.

The deceased has been identified as Shankun Majhi (25) of Budulipadar village under Kurtamgarh panchayat in the district.

As per reports, after returning from Hyderabad, Majhi was first lodged at the Kurtamgarh quarantine centre and discharged after 14 days.

However, he later started developing Covid-19 symptoms and was immediately brought to the COVID Care Centre in Badagaon village under Baliguda block in the district on June 16.

However, Majhi hung himself in the COVID Care yesterday even though reports of his swab samples are yet to come.

Confirming the death, Baliguda Sub-Collector Debendra Kumar Nanda said, “He (Majhi) was found hanging in his room and suicide note has been recovered from the spot.”

After the interrogation of his family members, it was found that Majhi had been battling depression for the last few months. “He used to tell his mother that he sees ghosts in his dreams and wants to go to God,” added Nanda.

Meanwhile, the district administration has handed over Majhi’s body to his family members after conducting post-mortem.
