Bhubaneswar: Barely two days after the launch of a special help desk and helpline number by the city police to deal with the cyber crimes, a city-based IT (Information Technology) consultant has fallen prey to the online fraud and lost Rs 29,000.
The victim, Parthasarathi who is a customer of RBL bank, said, the fraudsters had called him several times posing them as customer care executive of the bank. On Saturday, the callers managed to dupe the IT consultant of Rs 29,400.
Parthasarathi said that the fraudster asked him to share the card CVV number to get reward points in the credit card. He initially raised suspicion over a possible fraud. But, later the fraudster managed to flatter him and won the trust by posing himself as an executive from the customer care division.
"He (the fraudster) told me over phone that you have a reward point which you can either adjust in your bill or it would add to your card. Then I asked him to add the points in the card. He asked me to provide the CVV number. When he confidently told me that he is speaking from customer care division of the bank, I gave him the CVV number. Soon after, I received an OTP. When I forwarded the same, Rs 29,400 was debited from my account," said Parthasarathi.
Hours after, the victim lodged a complaint at cyber Help desk and cyber police station.
Notably, Commissionerate police on Thursday launched a help desk and help line number to initiate immediate action against the fraudsters and speed up the investigation of all cyber crimes.
The Help desk which is being functioned at the special squad office is being managed by a sub-inspector rank officer.
