Cuttack: A man died after being hacked with sharp weapons by some unidentified miscreants in Harijansahi under Banipada panchayat in Choudwar area late Tuesday night. Reason, he dared to raise his voice against people involved in illegally manufacturing and selling alcohol in his locality.

A group of women of Harijansahi approached the local police outpost yesterday demanding action against the people involved in illegal trade of liquor in the region. Later they sat on agitation in the village alleging inaction of the authorities and demanded immediate arrest of the liquor peddlers.

Enraged over the action of the villagers, some local goons attacked the protestors. They allegedly picked up Saroj Samal, one of the agitator and attacked him with sharp weapons before throwing him on the roadside.

Informed, police rushed to the spot and rescued Saroj. However, he succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital.

“Protesting police inaction into the matter, we sat on dharna in the village demanding immediate arrest of the people involved in the liquor trade. But the mafias attacked us and took Saroj with them. Later, he was found with grievous injuries from the roadside,” said a local resident Runi Samal.

An investigation has been initiated but the police are yet to make an arrest in connection with the incident. A scientific team has also reached the spot for a detailed probe.

Seeking justice over the incident, Saroj’s wife, Lati Samal said, “A brawl erupted in the village over liquor trade and some goons attacked and killed my husband for staging protest. I want stringent action against the culprits."
