Bhubaneswar: The craze for easy money and lavish lifestyle has been landing engineering graduates of the state behind the bars.

According to reports, as many as 165 cases were registered against engineering students between 2007 and 2017, and a total of 744 students were arrested on criminal charges during the same period.

Many engineering students have been found involved in crimes such as ATM loot, cyber crime and illegal possession of weapons, reports said.

Meanwhile the growing crime rate among these young techies in recent years has become a major cause of concern for parents and college authorities.

Former Director General of police Sanjeeb Marik blamed it on the poor quality of education.

“The quality of education in engineering colleges has severely deteriorated during the recent years because of which students have turned hopeless. The joblessness has added to the woes pushing them to resort to criminal activities,” Marik said.

On the other hand, educationists have urged for proper counselling of these students to help them shun such negative thoughts.

“It is not a difficult task for the students to misuse technology. They should be sensitised about the rationale behind pursuing an engineering course. Only then they would be able to contribute to the society in a positive way,” Educationist Pritish Acharya said.
