Puri: The Puri district administration on Monday lifted the restrictions clamped on the conduct of cremations at Swargadwar. Now people from other districts of the State can come to Puri to conduct last rites of their loved ones at Swargadwar.

Informing about the development, Puri Collector, Balwant Singh today stated that the administration decided to lift the restrictions as COVID-19 cases are on a declining trend and daily case load has come down to two digits in the last few weeks.

“We had to take a tough decision to impose restrictions on cremation of bodies from outside Puri at Swargadwar due to the COVID situation. But today, we have decided to withdraw the restrictions,” said Singh.

Singh further stated that all the existing COVID-19 protocols including ban on congregation of more than 20 persons during funerals will be strictly followed along with mandatory use of masks and social distancing norms.

“We appeal those coming to Puri Swargadwar from other parts of the State to strictly follow the COVID-19 guidelines and we thank people for their cooperation during the last three months,” Singh added.

On July 7, the Puri district administration had barred cremation of the dead bodies from outside the district at Swargadwar. Such restrictions were clamped owing to rising COVID-19 cases.
