Balasore: A quarantine centre in Barabatia village under Bhogarai area of Balasore district was in the grip of a violent commotion as angry locals chased and thrashed Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) and Auxiliary Nursing Midwifery (ANM) workers after an inmate of the centre died.

The deceased identified as Ramakanta Das (45) died at the Temporary Medical Camp (TMC) set up by the State government for quarantine of people returning from outside the state. According to sources, Das, who returned from South Africa on July 20, was found dead on Wednesday morning.

Soon after the news of his death spread in the area, irate villagers locked the TMC and thrashed the ASHA and ANM workers engaged to oversee operations at the centre.

Meanwhile, family members of Das have alleged murder.

“My father was murdered. Those who are responsible for my father’s death should be punished,” said Samaresh Das, son of the deceased.

On being informed about the incident, police, tehsildar, block development officer (BDO) and a medical team rushed the scene and a probe has been launched by the cops.
