Bhubaneswar: Odisha witnessed an explosion in COVID-19 cases for the fourth consecutive day with 456 persons testing positive for the virus on Monday. The total case count in the State now stands at 9526.

The State also witnessed two more COVID-19 deaths in the last 24 hours. The deaths were reported from Ganjam and Jajpur.

"Regret to report the demise of two Covid positive patients while under treatment in hospital," tweeted the health department.

The 77-year-old male of Ganjam district, who was suffering from hypertension, succumbed to the virus. Another male aged 64 from Jajpur district also passed away. He was a patient of diabetes.

Of the total cases detected today, 309 were reported from various quarantine centres across the State while 147 are local contact cases.

Ganjam again reported the highest 166 cases while the district of Jajpur remained at second spot with 57 cases. Similarly, Bargarh, Nabarangpur, Jagatsinghpur, Khurda and Sundergarh reported 33, 24, 23, 21 and 20 cases respectively.

The active cases in Odisha now stand at 3254 while 6224 recoveries have been reported in the State so far.

A total of 4827 RT-PCR tests were conducted in the last 24 hours taking the cumulative tests in the State to 297234 till Monday.

Later in the day, the State reported 262 recoveries.
