Citing harassment of OTV, BJP MLA Opposes Amendment To Epidemic Law In Assembly

Bhubaneswar: The second day of the Odisha Assembly’s monsoon session witnessed the Opposition party raising the issue pertaining to the case against the State’s largest media house, Odisha Television Network (OTN) during the discussion on Epidemic Diseases (Amendment) Bill 2020.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA, Jayanarayan Mishra raked up the case against OTV wherein the police had served notices to the media house even for posting a viral audio conversation between two friends featuring a discussion on alleged COVID19 mismanagement.

Mishra said that the Odisha Epidemic Diseases (Amendment) Bill 2020 has some serious flaws. According to the bill, anybody who dares to question the government would be dragged to court, just like in the case of OTV, he said.

If this bill is allowed to become a law, time will come when the government will not hesitate to pull the Opposition parties to the court too for raking up issues concerning the common man, Mishra added.

The said bill has a provision of a jail term of up to two years and a fine amounting up to Rs 1 Lakh for anybody violating the act.
