Paradip: Movement of cargo and other shipping activities came to a grinding halt as workers of different stevedore firms resorted to cease-work at the Paradip Port here on Wednesday.

The workers under an aegis of the 'Paradip Port Shramik Samanyua Samiti', launched the strike demanding a minimum monthly salary of Rs 18,000 against eight hours of work per day.

The workers today staged a dharna near Gate no - 3 of the port and threatened to continue strike till their demands are met.

Besides, the workers also want strict implementation of labour laws, ESI and EPF provision and abolition of the existing practice to layoff employees without prior notice.

Though a meeting was earlier held with the port authorities, it ended inconclusive thereby forcing the workers to observe the strike today.
