Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) has sought report from the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Bhubaneswar in the matter of the death of Asutosh Mohanty alias Rishi, a B. Tech Student.

OHRC's acting chairperson B K Mishra called for a report from the DCP within three weeks about the progress of the investigation made in case of Rishi death case. The commission also wanted to know whether any final report has been submitted in the court or not.

"Hence, in this case let a copy of the petition be sent to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Bhubaneswar, who is to report about the fate of Khandagiri PS UD Case No.64 of 2016 to the Commission within three weeks," the order copy mentioned.

Stating that the Commission has no jurisdiction to direct the Police to enquire in to the matter in a particular manner as has been prayed for by the petitioner, Justice Mishra made it clear that the OHRC cannot interfere in a police inquiry or investigation but it can only call for a report from the concerned officer.

The commission was hearing a petition from human rights activist Akhand regarding the alleged inaction of Bhubaneswar Police in unearthing the mystery over the death.

The student had died under mysterious circumstances on May 5, 2016.
