Bhubaneswar: Consumers are now feeling the pinch of rising potato prices which have seen a steep rise of Rs 5 per kg in the past couple of days.
At present, 3kg potato is being sold at a price of around Rs 50 against Rs 30 to Rs 35 a few days back.
The price of tuber in retail markets in several parts of the State varies between Rs 55 and 60 per 3Kg.
"Potato prices are fluctuating due to a rise in prices in neighbouring States," said Devendra Sahu, Chhatrabazar Traders' Association in Cuttack.
Food and Civil Supplies Minister Surya Narayan Patro stated that the government has convened an emergency meeting to discuss the crisis situation. The Minister has also warned of stern action against illegal hoarders.
"Odisha's potato requirement is nearly seven times more than its production. As production in Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal has failed, prices have gone up in Odisha owing to fluctuation in the existing demand and supply," said Patro.
Patro further informed that the local traders, who have stocked potatoes, are not releasing the commodity into the market apprehending further rise in prices.
