Bargarh: Farmers in the district, who were eagerly waiting for the arrival of monsoon, are now a worried lot as quintals of paddy sacks are lying unsold in the market yards.
Source said that in Resham market yard alone, around 1,54,582 packets of paddy are lying unattended. The farmers fear that their produce might be damaged due to rains if the district Supplies officials do not procure paddy before monsoon hits the district.
Similar situations can also be seen in other 77 market yards in the district.
“We have supplied paddy since May 15 to the market yard whereas no trader has come forward to purchase it,” said Sanak Patra, a distraught farmer.
Echoing his views, another farmer Sankhyakari Khamari said, “We are very concerned as we do not know when the paddy will be procured. Monsoon is fast approaching the State.”
However, district Supplies officials said purchase of paddy will be completed in three-four days as the procurement process is going on.
Meanwhile, the climatic condition in the State has changed with fall in temperature and rain at some places. The Meteorological department has said monsoon has reached Kerala and is all set to hit the State in a few days.
