Bhubaneswar: An elephant reportedly went on a wild rampage on Saturday killing one buffalo and injuring five others here at Patharagadia village near Chandaka forest range in the Capital City.
According to a local, Benudhar Behera, the incident occurred late on Saturday night when he was resting in his house. In the moonlight, the villager suddenly noticed an elephant moving around in the place where the buffaloes had been sheltered.
Scared, he ran away from the place from the back side of his house. After he returned in the morning, he found one buffalo dead and five others injured critically, after which he suspected that they have been attacked by the elephant.
Upon getting information in the morning, forest department officials reached the spot and took stock of the situation.
"I could notice only one elephant. Forest department came for an inspection and assured to compensate for the loss incurred," Behera said.
Meanwhile, the locals have alleged that the forest department is not taking steps to patrol the area during the night.
After a thorough inspection of the incident, Wildlife Range Officer Purnachandra Swain said," One baby buffalo has been killed and five more have been injured. Another buffalo's horn is broken. Compensation rate according to the government guidelines will be provided after post mortem. Also the government will bear all the treatment expenses of the five injured buffaloes."
