Child marriage bid foiled in Malkangiri

Malkangiri: Childline officials today successfully foiled an attempt to marry off a minor girl at MV-52 village under Korkanda block of Malkangiri district.

This is the third such incident reported from the district in last three days, sources said.

Acting on a tip-off, the Childline officials along with police reached the spot and verified the proof-of-age documents of the girl. "After verification, we found that the girl is only 16 years old. We discussed with her family members and rescued her. She will be produced before the CWC tomorrow," said Chumki Behera, district coordinator of Childline.

According to sources, the family of the girl had fixed her marriage with a youth of MV-92 village in Korkonda. The engagement of the two was being conducted today, when the Childline officials reached the spot and stopped the ceremony.
