Bhadrak: The cyber cell of the state Crime Branch (CB) detained five persons in connection with the circulation of objectionable remarks in social media that led to communal riots in the town.
All the five accused belong to Bhadrak and are being interrogated, said CB Special DG BK Sharma here today. A seven-member team of the CB had visited Bhadrak town on April 10 to probe the spread of rumours in social media.
Activists of the Bajrang Sena and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) had on April 6 staged a demonstration in front of the Bhadrak Town police station protesting offensive remarks on Lord Ram in social media. Hundreds of activists had staged road blockade by burning tyres.
A few days after the incident, communal tension once again gripped Bhadrak after the peace committee meeting among heads of religious groups could not reach a consensus. A group of angry mob staged road blockade, ransacked police vehicles and torched several shops.
Later, the district administration imposed curfew in the town and periphery.
