Berhampur: The Odisha finance department on Tuesday ordered an inspection of the accounts of Berhampur University after finding a mismatch between bank deposits and expenditure of the varsity to the tune of Rs 19.64 crores.
According to sources, the department ordered the director of the local fund audit to look into the financial irregularities.
Reportedly, Registrar of the University and Finance Head Shailendra Dwibedi, through a letter, had sought the intervention of Chancellor and Governor SC Jamir urging him to order a probe into all the alleged financial irregularities.
Following this, the finance department took cognizance of the alleged financial irregularities in the university and ordered an audit.
PG Council Chairman Debi Pattnaik said, “Financial irregularities have been detected in the Berhampur University. As per the reports submitted by the Registrar, a letter has been e-despatched to us. A committee has also been formed to investigate into the irregularities.”
On the other hand, former Vice-Chancellor of the University Jayanta Kumar Mohaparta said, “All the well wishers of the university should welcome the decision of the finance department. There will be only one result and everyone would come to know whether all these allegations are factual or false.”

Varsity ex-president Bhabani Kanta Sahu, members of the lawyers’ association in Berhampur and other social activists had earlier submitted memoranda to the Chancellor, State Vigilance and SP following which a complaint was also lodged in the Vigilance Court.
