Bhubaneswar: The Railways has decided to felicitate three alert personnel who played a crucial role in averting a major train mishap near Muniguda station in Rayagada district in the wee hours of Tuesday.

It was the presence of mind of a loco pilot, assistant loco pilot of a goods train and a gangman that saved hundreds of passengers travelling in the Visakhapatnam-Korba Express from danger.

According to reports, Visakhapatnam-Korba Express was scheduled to pass through Muniguda station when the train was stopped after a gangman detected cracks on the railway line.

It was however, the loco pilot and assistant loco pilot of a goods train who first sensed trouble on the tracks. Though the goods train successfully crossed the broken track near pole number- 289/12-13, the duo immediately informed the local station manager.

The Visakhapatnam-Korba Express that was scheduled to pass through the same track was immediately stopped by the gangman by flashing a red light signal.

Later steps were taken to immediately restore the tracks under the supervision of senior railway officials.

“The systems and our personnel including loco pilot, assistant pilot and gangman worked as per the protocol and as per procedure tracks were repaired,” said DRM, Sambalpur, Jaydip Gupta.

Gupta further informed that all the three railway personnel would be awarded for their presence of mind and alertness that averted a possible mishap.
