Bhubaneswar: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday targeted the Odisha government over its decision to suddenly remove BK Sharma from the post of Director General of Police (DGP) stating that those who do not work according to the whims and fancies of the government are ousted in the State.

Addressing a presser in Bhubaneswar today, party general secretary Lekhashree Samantsinghar said, "The circumstances in which a top cop was removed from his post overnight was tyrannical. DGP BK Sharma was ousted to suppress facts in lady PEO Smitarani death case. The government has adopted dictatorship and running arbitrary rule."

"Even though BJP is the chief Opposition in Odisha, the ruling-BJD is not allowing our legislators to raise any issue in the Assembly. BJD is hand-in-glove with the criminals which is why the party is trying to protect the antisocials and those involved in sexual violence cases," she alleged.

Taking a jibe at the State government over MoS Home Dibyashankar Mishra's statement in Assembly on the death of a girl in Jagatsinghpur, Lekha said, “Women and minor girls are not safe in Odisha, because the government here is taking such issues very lightly. Even now in many places, police is refusing to register complaints of victims. Is this what CM Naveen Patnaik meant when he said not to politicise tragedies?”

Meanwhile, responding to Lekha Samantsinghar, Odisha government chief whip Pramila Mallick said, "At present, cases of violence against women are more in BJP-ruled States in comparison to non-BJP ruled States. Let Lekha Madam fix the issues in UP and Assam first where BJP is ruling."
