Bhubaneswar: A day after Opposition BJP and Congress legislators created a ruckus in the House demanding a statement from CM Naveen Patnaik on the alleged rape and suicide of a girl in Tentoi village under Naugaon police limits of Jagatsinghpur district, MoS Home Dibyashankar Mishra today in his statement said that the girl ended her life out of shame.

“The girl committed suicide out of shame after a youth who was in a one-sided affair with her, circulated her objectionable pictures,” the minister said.

Detailing about the incident, Mishra mentioned, “The girl's body was recovered from her house on November 7. Police registered a case based on a complaint filed by her mother. It is being alleged that the family had lodged FIR prior to her death, but that's not true.”

The accused was arrested on November 9, two days after the death of the girl, said Mishra.

Rubbishing reports citing denial of land for cremation, Mishra said, "A few people are saying that the girl's family was not provided land to cremate her. This is completely false. She was cremated in her village."

However, there is no record of the Minister mentioning whether the girl was raped.

Earlier on Monday, senior Congress Legislature Party leader Narasingha Mishra quoting a newspaper report had alleged in the House, “The girl was frequently raped, even in presence of her parents but the local police did not take any action leading to a situation where the hapless girl committed suicide. Police later registered a case under Sec 306 (abetment) under IPC against the accused youth and not under Sec 302 (murder) of IPC. The girl finally committed suicide on November 7 for being denied justice.”

The Congress MLA also quoted Tirtol MLA and BJD SC Cell president Bishnu Charan Das who has also condemned the incident and blamed the local police. "The incident could have been averted had the police taken prompt action," Mishra said quoting the BJD MLA.
