Rourkela: Hundreds of BJP workers have been taken into preventive custody following a scuffle with police while the saffron party members protested CM Naveen Patnaik's visit to Rourkela on Tuesday.

The party workers faced off with the police near Jubilee park in Sector-8 area while they took out a rally to oppose the CM's tour.

“He (Naveen Patnaik) should tell us what he has done for Rourkela. During 2014 elections, he had made several announcements for the city. Have any of his announcements been implemented so far? The CM is just trying to make the Rourkela citizens fool,” a protesting worker said.

Two MLAs from the ruling party are representing Sundergarh district in the State Assembly. Can they give the progress report of the district, another party activist asked?

Meanwhile, the Congress party led by Sundergarh district president Gorge Tirkey also staged a dharna near Bisra Square to protest the Chief Minister's visit to the steel city. The party observed the day as 'Dhoka Divas' (Betrayal Day) alleging that the State government has done nothing for Rourkela except making tall promises. Scores of party activists joined the agitation raising slogans 'Naveen Patnaik-Go Back' and waving banners against the BJD government.

CM Naveen Patnaik is scheduled to lay foundation stone for the country’s largest hockey stadium on the campus of the Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT). Patnaik is also scheduled to lay stone and inaugurate several projects worth Rs 5,000 crore in the district.

He will also announce package for Rourkela smart city and other projects.

Special arrangements have been made at the BPUT campus from where the CM will lay foundation stone of various projects in Sundergarh district through video conference.

As per schedule, Patnaik will leave his residence at 10 am and reach the steel city at 11.20 before kicking off the programme at 11.30am. He will leave for Bhubaneswar at 12.35 pm before addressing a public gathering.

Elaborate security arrangements have been made by the police in view of the CM's visit.
