Woman killed, valuables damaged in several districts as severe Nor’wester hits Odisha

A violent Kalabaisakhi (nor’wester storm) wreaked havoc across various parts of Odisha on Saturday evening, leaving a trail of destruction, casualties, and widespread power outages. In a tragic incident in Nua Betenda village under Niali of Cuttack district, a woman identified as Bebina Sahu lost her life after being struck by a falling tree. 

How The Incident Took Place?

According to local sources, Bebina was attempting to take her cow to shelter as stormy winds approached. During this time, a large coconut tree broke under the impact of the strong winds and fell directly on her. She was rushed to the Niali Community Health Centre, where doctors declared her dead on arrival. Unfortunately, the cow also died in the incident. Local residents have demanded compensation and immediate assistance for the bereaved family.

Destruction In Kandhamal

Meanwhile, in Phulbani, the storm caused the collapse of a boundary wall, which crushed several vehicles including a bike, an auto-rickshaw, and a Bolero SUV. The wall gave way due to the heavy rain and strong winds, particularly affecting the Peonpada main road area. Uprooted trees also caused disruption in electricity supply across the town and surrounding regions.

Boudh Also Not Spared

The storm's impact was also felt in Boudh district, where large trees and even a mobile tower were brought down by the intense wind and rain. The mobile tower collapse has raised concerns about communication disruptions in the area. Many roads were blocked by fallen trees, making travel extremely difficult. Fire services personnel have been deployed to clear the roads and restore mobility.

Across the affected districts, residents reported power outages, traffic disruptions, and structural damages. The regional weather department had earlier issued a warning for high-speed winds and heavy rainfall, and authorities are now working on restoration efforts. Emergency response teams have been mobilized to assess the full extent of damage and assist those affected.

The State Disaster Management Authority has urged citizens to remain alert, especially in storm-prone regions, and advised local administrations to expedite clearing operations and provide relief to the impacted families.

As Odisha braces for more summer storms in the coming weeks, officials are emphasizing the need for preparedness and resilient infrastructure, especially in rural areas vulnerable to extreme weather events.
