The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a thunderstorm and rainfall warning for several Odisha districts over the next four days. According to the latest reports, various districts across the state are likely to experience lightning and moderate rain till May 23, 2025. The IMD has sounded a yellow warning for lightning in 15 districts for Monday.
The districts likely to be affected include Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Gajapati, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Balangir, and Nuapada. These regions are likely to witness lightning activity accompanied by rain, as per the IMD advisory.
Yellow Alert Extended for Coming Days
The IMD has further issued a yellow alert for lightning on May 20 for nine districts and for sixteen districts on May 21. This alert indicates a continued risk of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning.
Wind Speed Likely to Reach 50 Kmph
Additionally, the weather department has forecast winds blowing at speeds ranging from 40 to 50 kmph in these areas during the alert period.

Previously, the IMD had issued a fresh alert for Odisha, warning of thunderstorms and lightning for three days starting today, with the warning valid until May 19, 2025. An orange alert was issued for Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Koraput, Rayagada, and Malkangiri, predicting isolated heavy rainfall and gusty winds reaching 50 to 60 kmph.
Eight other districts were placed under a yellow warning. The ongoing weather activity was attributed to Kalbaisakhi (Nor’wester) conditions. Despite cloudy skies, coastal areas, including Bhubaneswar, experienced oppressive humidity. The IMD also noted that no significant change in daytime temperatures is expected in the coming days, while hot and humid conditions were forecast for districts like Gajapati, Ganjam, Khordha, Nayagarh, Puri, Cuttack, and Jagatsinghpur until Monday.
