Onset of monsoon is likely to get delayed in Odisha. As per India Meteorological Department (IMD), there is every possibility that the southwest monsoon will not touch the State on June 12.

However, a detailed forecast is yet to be made by the IMD. Normally the southwest monsoon reaches Odisha between June 12-15.

Southwest Monsoon has further advanced over some parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal, southwest & westcentral Bay of Bengal on Tuesday. IMD’s senior scientist RK Jenamani said that at present the conditions are not favourable and the strong westerly wind is also affecting the advancement of monsoon. As a result, several parts of Odisha are experiencing heatwave conditions.

“We have given forecast for next five days and it appears that there is no probability of monsoon onset by June 12. We will again review the condition and predict the onset date,” said Jenamani.

Jenamani said only after reviewing the condition over next 2-3 days, things regarding what would be the advancement of the monsoon will get cleared.

Earlier, the IMD had predicted above normal rainfall in the month of June for Odisha and other parts of the country.
