Kalbaisakhi to bring heavy rainfall, thunderstorms in Odisha until April 24

PUBLISHED: LAST UPDATE:

The Indian Meteorological Department forecasts thunderstorms with rainfall across Odisha until April 24 due to Kalbaisakhi. Bhubaneswar, Cuttack face disruptions; yellow alert issued in 15 districts.

Heavy Rainfall Alert

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast thunderstorms with rainfall across various regions of Odisha, which are expected to continue until 24 April. Residents are advised to exercise caution as light to moderate showers, coupled with gusty winds, are expected to continue throughout the period.

The conditions conducive to Kalbaisakhi, a pre-monsoon weather phenomenon, are prevailing due to moderate temperatures in the state. After heavy rainfall battered Cuttack and Bhubaneswar yesterday, the twin cities are expected to witness rainfall today too.

Recent Downpour Causes Disruption

On Friday, Bhubaneswar, along with Cuttack, Balasore, and Dhenkanal, experienced heavy rainfall and strong winds under the influence of the Kalbaisakhi. The intense weather resulted in temporary standstills across Bhubaneswar, with inhabitants taking shelter wherever possible. Streets usually teeming with activity were remarkably quiet.

What's Ahead?

Today, the IMD predicts light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms in several areas, urging residents to exercise caution. With the Kalbaisakhi in full swing, the weather is expected to remain unpredictable, affecting daily life in affected regions.

Residents are advised to stay informed through official updates and take necessary precautions when venturing outside during adverse weather conditions.

Yellow Alert Issued

Meanwhile, the Bhubaneswar Regional Meteorological Centre has issued a yellow alert across 15 districts, warning residents of the impact of Kalbaisakhi. The districts of Mayurbhanj, Balasore, and Bhadrak are particularly at risk of experiencing intense storms, with forecasts predicting significant rainfall, lightning, and potential hailstorms. Particularly, Balasore and Mayurbhanj could face heavy rainfall alongside lightning, with wind speeds reaching up to 50 to 60 km/h in certain areas.
