The severe cyclonic storm brewing over west-central and adjoining south Bay of Bengal won’t have a direct impact on Odisha, informed the regional director of IMD, Bhubaneswar on Thursday.

As per the IMD, the low-pressure area formed over the southwest & adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal on Wednesday lay as a well-marked low-pressure area over west-central and adjoining south Bay of Bengal at 8.30 AM on Thursday, May 23.

It is very likely to continue to move north-eastwards and concentrate into a depression over central parts of the Bay of Bengal by May 24 morning. Thereafter, it is very likely to continue to move north-eastwards and intensify further into a cyclonic storm over the east-central Bay of Bengal by the May 25 morning.

Subsequently, it would move nearly northwards and reach Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal coasts by May 26 evening as a severe cyclonic storm.

While the people of Odisha are in apprehension over the impending cyclone, Bhubaneswar IMD director Manorama Mohanty on Thursday allayed the fear, saying the severe cyclonic storm won’t have any direct impact on Odisha.

However, most places of north Odisha will experience light to moderate rainfall and districts like Balasore, Bhadrak and Kendrapara are very likely to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall.

“It is likely that the low pressure will concentrate into a depression on May 24 morning. It will move north-eastwards and gather its speed. By May 25 morning, it is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm over east-central Bay of Bengal. On May 26, most places of north Odisha will experience light to moderate rainfall and one or two places may witness heavy to very heavy rainfall. The districts that are expected to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall are Balasore, Bhadrak and Kendrapara,” said Mohanty.

“On May 27, while some places are likely to experience rainfall, one or two places of Balasore and Mayurbhanj are very likely to witness heavy downpour,” she added.
