IMD predicts milder winter in India for December 2024 to February 2025 with fewer coldwave days. Above-normal minimum and maximum temperatures expected, except in southern Peninsula.

Expect lesser coldwave days this winter

Even as people in different parts of the country are busy taking out their winter outfits anticipating a drop in minimum temperature, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a milder winter this year.

Apart from a milder winter, the IMD has predicted fewer coldwave days in different parts of India this season.

In its outlook for the temperatures during the winter season (December 2024 to February 2025), the IMD has stated that above-normal minimum temperatures are likely over most parts of the country.

During the season above-normal maximum temperatures are likely over most parts of the country except most areas over south Peninsular India, where normal to below-normal maximum temperatures are likely.

“Below-normal cold wave days are expected over most parts of northwest, central, east and northeast parts of the country during the upcoming winter season (December 2024 to February 2025),” said IMD in its extended outlook.

During December 2024, monthly minimum temperatures are most likely to be above normal over most parts of the country. 
Monthly maximum temperatures for December 2024 are likely to be above normal over most parts of the country except some areas of central India where normal maximum temperatures are likely.

Similarly, the occurrence of cold waves over northwest, central, east and northeastern parts of the country during December 2024 is likely to be below normal.
