Depression near Chilika Lake, to weaken gradually in next 24 hours: IMD

The depression over the Bay of Bengal near Odisha's Chilika Lake, moving west-northwest at 3 kmph, is expected to weaken in 24 hours, says IMD. Heavy rainfall is forecasted for various districts across Odisha and Chhattisgarh.

The depression over the Northwest and adjoining Westcentral Bay of Bengal off Odisha and adjoining north Andhra Pradesh coasts moved nearly west-northwestwards with a speed of 3kmph during the past 6 hours, informed India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday.

As per IMD, the system lay centered at 0530 hours IST of today, the over Odisha coast near Chilika Lake, about 40 km south-southwest of Puri (Odisha) and 70 km East-Northeast of Gopalpur (Odisha). It is likely to move further west-northwestwards across Odisha and Chhattisgarh and weaken gradually during the next 24 hours, said IMD.

As per the forecast issued by IMD on Friday, several parts of Odisha will continue to experience heavy rainfall activities under the influence of the system.

Orange Warning: Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Kandhamal, Boudh, Kalahandi, Bolangir, Nuapada. 

Yellow Warning: Heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Bargarh, Sonepur, Sambalpur, Angul, Jharsuguda, Gajapati, Ganjam, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Nawarangpur, Balasore.

Day-3: (Valid from 0830 Hrs IST of 21.07.24 to 0830 Hrs IST of 22.07.24.)

Yellow Warning: Heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Bargarh.

Day-4: (Valid from 0830 Hrs IST of 22.07.24 to 0830 Hrs IST of 23.07.24.)

Yellow Warning: Heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal.
