Cyclonic storm likely to intensify into severe cyclonic storm, Odisha to experience heavy rainfall

A cyclonic storm is expected to form over the east-central Bay of Bengal around October 23, possibly intensifying into a severe cyclonic storm as per IMD DG Mrutyunjay Mohapatra. The predicted wind speed could reach up to 100-120 km/h. Fishermen are advised to avoid the Andaman Sea until October 21 and the Bay of Bengal till October 25.

Cyclonic storm likely to intensify into severe cyclonic storm

The cyclonic storm which is likely to be formed over east-central Bay of Bengal around October 23 may intensify into a severe cyclonic storm, predicted India Meteorological Department (IMD) DG Mrutyunjay Mohapatra on Sunday.

Speaking to OTV, Mohapatra said, “Cyclone brings heavy rainfall, gusty wind and high tide simultaneously. So, we cannot take any cyclone lightly.” 

“There is no possibility of the impending cyclonic storm to intensify into a super cyclonic storm or extremely super cyclonic storm. However, as per the prediction made today, the cyclonic storm may intensify into a severe cyclonic storm. The wind speed may reach up to 100-120 kmph,” Mohapatra added.

Asked about the landfall of the possible cyclonic storm, Mohapatra said, “Its path, wind speed and intensity will be predicted after the system intensifies into depression from low pressure.”

Warning for fishermen

The fishermen are advised not to venture into the Andaman sea till October 21, the Central Bay of Bengal till October 23 and north Bay of Bengal till October 25 along the Odisha, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh coast. If they are already in the sea, then they must return to the coast by October 21.
