Cyclonic storm: Wind speed will reach 100-120 kmph on Oct 24: IMD DG
A cyclonic storm is likely to form over east-central Bay of Bengal around October 23, predicted the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday.
Speaking exclusively to OTV about the cyclonic storm’s movement and its impact on Odisha, IMD DG Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said, “The cyclonic circulation formed over the central Andaman Sea yesterday has moved north-west direction and lay centred at north Andaman Sea and nearby east Bay of Bengal. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over east-central Bay of Bengal by today evening or tomorrow morning.”
“It will gradually move toward west and north-west ward and intensify into a depression by October 22 and it will further intensify into a cyclonic storm on October 23 over east-central Bay of Bengal. Then it will move towards north-west ward and it will reach the northwest Bay of Bengal off the Odisha-West Bengal coasts by October 24 morning,” Mohapatra added.
Sharing about the wind speed, the IMD DG said, “Under its influence, the sea conditions will remain rough. The wind speed will reach up to 45 kmph October 21 morning and it will further increase to 40-50 kmph gusting upto 60 kmph by October 21 evening.”
“When the system intensifies into a cyclonic storm on October 23, the wind speed will reach up to 65-75 kmph in the central Bay of Bengal gusting up to 85 kmph and when it will reach northwest Bay of Bengal off the Odisha-West Bengal coasts the wind speed will increase to 100 to 120 kmph,” he added.
“The wind speed along the Odisha coast may reach 40-50 kmph gusting up to 60 kmph from October 23 evening and will reach a speed 100-120 kmph by October 24 night. This is a preliminary prediction,”he informed.
Odisha will experience rainfall activities in the coastal region from October 23 with one or two places likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall. The rainfall activity will be maximum on October 24 and 25 throughout the State.
Several places may record heavy to very heavy rainfall (20cm), while some places may witness extremely heavy rainfall (20 cm to 30 cm). The most important day is October 24 and 25 when the wind speed and rainfall will be the maximum.
