With all eyes on cyclonic storm ‘Mandous’, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday issued a detailed forecast regarding its landfall.

As per IMD, cyclonic storm Mandous over southwest Bay of Bengal is likely to move westnorthwest wards and cross north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coast between Puducherry and Sriharikota with a wind speed of 70 kmph around midnight of December 9.

Cyclone Mandous will maintain its peak intensity today, packing a maximum sustained wind speed of 80-90 kmph, gusting to 100 kmph. The cyclonic storm’s maximum sustained wind speed may drop to 65-75 kmph, gusting to 85 kmph during landfall, predicted IMD adding that soon it will turn into a deep depression.

The system will eventually become depression and subsequently into a well marked low pressure area by December 10, 2022.

IMD has also issued red alert for heavy rainfall on Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, and Villupuram districts of Tamil Nadu. An orange alert has also been issued for Cuddalore, Myladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, and Pudukottai districts for Thursday.

Rainfall Warning

Light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places and extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places is very likely over north coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and adjoining south Coastal Andhra Pradesh and isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over north interior Tamil Nadu and adjoining Rayalaseema on December 9.

It is likely to reduce to light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places likely over north Tamil Nadu and Rayalaseema and south Andhra Pradesh on December 10.
