The deep depression over Southwest and adjoining Southeast Bay of Bengal has intensified into a cyclonic storm Mandous, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Thursday.  

“The Deep Depression over Southwest & adjoining Southeast Bay of Bengal moved nearly westnorthwestwards with a speed of 10 kmph during past 6 hours, intensified into a cyclonic storm “Mandous” pronounced as “Man-Dous” and lay centered at 2330 hours IST of yesterday, the 07th December, 2022 over Southwest Bay of Bengal, near latitude 9.2°N and longitude 84.6°E, about 370 km east-northeast of Trincomalee (Sri Lanka), 500 km east of Jaffna (Sri Lanka), 560 km eastsoutheast of Karaikal and about 640 km southeast of Chennai,” the IMD said in its bulletin. 

“It is very likely to move west-northwestwards and cross north Tamilnadu, Puducherry and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coast between Puducherry and Sriharikota with a maximum sustained wind speed of 65-75 kmph gusting to 85 kmph around mid night of 09th December,” the IMD added. 

The weather bureau has predicted that light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy falls at isolated places is very likely over coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal and isolated heavy rainfall over adjoining areas of south coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema on December 8. 

Similarly, light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places and extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places is very likely over north coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and adjoining south Coastal Andhra Pradesh and isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall likely over north interior Tamil Nadu and adjoining Rayalaseema on December 9.

Though the cyclonic storm in the Bay of Bengal has no direct impact over Odisha, sky remained overcast in Bhubaneswar on Thursday morning under the influence of the system.

The IMD’s regional centre in Bhubaneswar has predicted that the southern part of the State will witness rainfall on December 10 and 11 under the impact of the cyclone.

The weather office predicted that light rain is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kalahandi, Kandhamal and Nabarangapur on December 10.

Similarly, light rain is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada and Nabarangpur on December 11.
