Blocking the way of an ambulance is a punishable offence in India. After the video of a car not giving way to an ambulance went viral on social media, Kerala Police slapped Rs 2.5 lakh fine and cancelled the license of the car owner.

Blocking the way of an ambulance is a punishable offence in India. According to Motor Vehicles Act 1988, and the Indian Penal Code (IPC), not giving way to an ambulance can lead to a fine, imprisonment or both. However, apart from being a punishable offence, it is all about humanity as blocking an ambulance may cause delayed medical attention of a critical patient, which may cause death. However, despite the strict rules, there are a few people who disrupt the emergency services. 

Recently, one such incident surfaced in Kerala. After the video of a car not giving way to an ambulance went viral on social media, Kerala Police slapped Rs 2.5 lakh fine and cancelled the license of the car owner, stated a report by Times Now.

As per reports, the incident took place on November 7, 2024, in Chalakudy. The car owner from Thrissur blocked the way of the ambulance, en route to Thrissur Medical College. The dashcam of the ambulance captured the incident in which the silver Maruti Suzuki Ciaz blocking the path of the ambulance tailing closely to the car. For over two minutes, the car blocked the ambulance on the narrow, two-lane road despite the emergency service vehicle's repeated honking and blaring siren.

The paramedics in the ambulance shared the dashcam footage on social media which went viral in no time. While netizens lashed out at the car owner, Kerala Police swinged into action and took decisive action against the motorist.

While the source of the video couldn't be verified, it has been widely shared on social media. The footage has sparked intense debate online. After Kerala Police's immediate action, netizens applauded the swift response and criticised the behaviour of the car owner.
