Washington: Scientists have developed a new biomaterial from the seeds of the tamarind tree which they claim could help regrow damaged nerves in the brain and spinal chord, a major finding which may soon revolutionise treatment of nerve-based diseases like Parkinson`s.

An international team, led by Monash University, has investigated xyloglucan -- a plant-based compound derived from the seeds of tamarind tree -- and found that it plays a major role in repairing damaged nerve cells in laboratory animals.
