Champions Trophy 2025: This is why ‘unlucky’ Kane Williamson called true gentleman of cricket
New Zealand’s former captain Kane Williamson’s dignified leadership and sportsmanship have made him everyone’s favourite. Despite great knocks, the star batter has time and again run out of luck and ends up on the losing side.
The Kiwis received yet another tragic loss against India, despite reaching the Champions Trophy 2025 after beating South Africa. Although Indians are happy that the trophy has come home, fans are feeling the pain for Kane Williamson, who has earned a good name among cricket lovers for his noble attitude as a sportsperson.
किस्मत ने तुम्हें फिर छला केन,
पर तुम हमेशा दिलों के चैंपियन रहे।💔😥#KaneWilliamsonpic.twitter.com/SPzJak2ghi— ज़िन्दगी गुलज़ार है ! (@Gulzar__sahab) March 9, 2025
Social Media Reaction:
Indian fans expressed admiration for Williamson's dignified leadership despite the loss, trending #RespectWilliamson on social media.
“Some wins aren’t measured in trophies. Kane Williamson, you’ve won respect, admiration, and hearts around the world. A leader in victory, a legend in defeat. The game is better because of you,” a fan shared.
Likewise, another fan shared, “A true gentleman of cricket, Kane Williamson never loses any heart.”
“True gentleman, did everything right in his career but never got the final result, I can relate his career with our life, so I feel bad for you. You will always be remembered as the greatest personality of this game,” shared another fan.
Game is Better Because of Williamson!
Despite the loss, Williamson emphasized learning from the defeat and said, “India are an outstanding team. It's important we try to take away some learnings.”
He suffered a quad strain during his brief 11-run innings in the Champions Trophy final, forcing him to miss the entire second innings. Substitute Mark Chapman replaced him on the field, leaving the Black Caps without their inspirational leader during India's chase. This injury compounded Williamson's frustrations, coming just days after his match-winning 102* against South Africa in the semifinals.
Williamson's Legacy in IND-NZ Rivalry
Apart from his fans in India, Kane shares a cordial bond with Indian players, especially Virat Kohli. The run-machine of India adores Kane and shares a close bond with him. Meanwhile, the final game marked Williamson's 30th ODI against India.
Though unsuccessful here, his career ODI average of 48.12 against India underscores his status as a respected adversary.
