CSK
Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the five-time IPL champions and one of the league's most consistent franchises, are in unfamiliar territory in the 2025 season. Sitting at the bottom of the table with just six points from 12 matches, the Yellow Army has been a shadow of its former self. With the playoffs out of reach and criticism mounting, former IPL coach and cricket analyst Tom Moody has urged CSK to make bold decisions, starting with parting ways with veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin.
Ashwin, who was bought for ₹9.75 crore in the mega auction amid much fanfare, was expected to bring experience and control to CSK’s bowling attack. However, the move hasn’t paid off. The 37-year-old off-spinner has taken just five wickets in eight matches, struggled with form, and found himself benched in key games. This comes on the heels of his international retirement in December 2024, casting doubts over his impact in the shortest format.
Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Tom Moody didn’t mince words:
"CSK’s model of backing seasoned players has worked historically, but this might be the time for a change. Spending nearly ₹10 crore on a player who’s not a guaranteed starter is a big call. Releasing Ashwin could free up vital funds ahead of the next auction," he said.
As CSK prepare to face Rajasthan Royals in their next game — a clash between two struggling sides — the management may already be thinking about the long-term picture. With an aging squad and inconsistent performances, it might be time for Chennai to hit the reset button and build around youth, energy, and form rather than reputation.
