IPL 2025 retention: MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma to Rinku Singh, know full team scenario before Oct 31

With the new rule in place, there is a possibility that CSK may keep hold of Dhoni.

IPL 2025 retention

BCCI has allowed each franchise to keep hold of as many as six players via retentions or by using the Right to Match (RTM) card up to their discretion. Of these six retentions/RTMs, a maximum of five capped players – Indian and overseas are allowed along with a maximum of two uncapped players. As per BCCI sources, all the 10 teams will have to shortlist the retention list by October 31st.

One of the significant rules that has been introduced ahead of the latest IPL mega auction is that a capped Indian player will become uncapped, if the player has in the last five calendar years preceding the year in which the relevant season is held, not featured in the playing XI in international cricket (Test match, ODI, T20O) or does not have a Central Contract with BCCI. This though is only applicable for Indian players.

CSK may retain Dhoni

As per reports, with BCCI reintroducing the rule scrapped in 2021, allowing players to be considered uncapped if they have retired from international cricket for five years, there is a possibility that CSK may keep hold of Dhoni.

Meanwhile, CEO Kasi Viswanathan has confirmed that Dhoni will call the franchise owner N Srinivasan soon to finalise the list of players to be retained. 

MI may hold Rohit back

As per several experts, since Rohit recently led India to a T20 World Cup victory, the franchise may hold him back.

KKR to hold Rinku

As per reports, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are reportedly going to retain star players like Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, Rinku Singh, Varun Chakaravarthy and Harshit Rana. However, Shreyas Iyer’s case is not sure.

SRH may release Umran Malik

Out of favour Jammu & Kashmir-based speedster Umran Malik is all set to be released by SRH ahead of IPL 2025 mega auctions. 

Washington Sundar in huge demand

On the back of his brilliant performance in Pune Test against New Zealand, spin all-rounder Washington Sundar has been in huge demand ahead of IPL 2025 mega auctions. As many as three IPL franchises including Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans are interested in signing the all-rounder. Sundar is currently part of Sunriser Hyderabad.

GT likely to retain Shubman Gill

Though many francises have shown their interest on Shubman Gill, he is likely to stay with Gujarat Titans.

Royal may release Chahal

Though willy leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal is the all-time leading wicket-taker in the IPL and he also holds the record for taking most wickets for the Rajasthan Royals in the cash-rich league, the franchise may release the out of favour spinner.

SRH likely to retain Cummins

Australian cricketers Pat Cummins and Travis Head joined SRH in the IPL 2024 auction for Rs 20.50 and Rs 6.80 crore respectively. The franchise is likely to retain both the cricketers for their splendid shows in the last edition of the cash-rich league.

Klaasen may be retained

SRH are all set to retain South African aggressive wicketkeeper-batsman Heinrich Klaasen because of his explosive batting.

LSG to retain Pooran, Mayank and Bishnoi

While West Indies wicketkeeper-batter Nicholas Pooran impressed with his attacking batting, Indian speedster Mayank Yadav was the find of the tournament in IPL 2024. Similarly, tweaker Ravi Bishnoi also impressed with his bowling in the last edition of IPL.  Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are likely to retain these three cricketers ahead of IPL 2025 mega auctions.
