Former England star terms Shubman Gill a carbon copy of Virat Kohli

PUBLISHED: LAST UPDATE:

Former England batter Jonathan Trott likens Shubman Gill to Virat Kohli, praising the young Indian's stellar performance in the ongoing Test series against England.

Shubman Gill

Former England batter Jonathan Trott has compared Shubman Gill to Virat Kohli, saying the young Indian batter is almost a carbon copy of the former Indian captain, who retired from Test cricket earlier this year in May. Gill, aged 25, has been in outstanding form in the ongoing Test series against England, amassing 585 runs in just two matches at an impressive average of 146.25.

In the series opener at Headingley in Leeds, Gill scored 147 in the first innings. He followed it up with superb knocks of 269 and 161 in the second Test at Edgbaston in Birmingham. Trott, who represented England in 52 Tests between 2009 and 2015, remarked that Gill couldn’t have asked for a better beginning to his tenure as India’s newly-appointed Test captain.

“Gill displayed what a complete batter he truly is. It brought to mind India’s previous number four — he’s almost a mirror image of that genius. I don’t think he could have imagined a better start to his first two Tests on this tour. Of course, he would’ve wanted a win at Headingley, but he’s now put India in a great position for a potential victory,” Trott said during a recent interaction.

“I genuinely feel lucky to have witnessed that innings. I don’t recall him offering the English bowlers a single opportunity. The way he shifted tempo — clearing the boundary with ease — not through slogging, but with pure, classical cricket strokes, was truly remarkable,” he added.
