Ravichandran Ashwin, a prominent figure in Indian cricket, returned to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) with much anticipation last year, being purchased at a substantial INR 9.75 crore for the Indian Premier League (IPL).

However, this season has not gone as planned for the experienced spinner, who has claimed only five wickets in seven matches with an economy rate of 9.29. The struggles have paralleled those of CSK, who found themselves unable to advance to the playoffs following their defeat to Punjab Kings on Wednesday.

Discussion of Future Moves

In the wake of the team's exit, former Indian cricketer and coach Sanjay Bangar highlighted the possibility of Ashwin being released ahead of the 2026 IPL season.

"The decision to retain Ashwin will be critical given the financial stakes involved," Bangar stated. "Releasing funds might be necessary, especially if Ashwin is not intended to be a regular part of the playing eleven. Key players like Ashwin and Matheesha Pathirana could be re-evaluated based on their value propositions."

Team Tactics Under Scrutiny

Harbhajan Singh, another former cricketer, criticised the sporadic deployment of Ashwin, questioning the logic behind such a significant financial commitment.

"The team selection did not fully consider the playing conditions," Singh commented. "Noor Ahmad, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Ravindra Jadeja playing together might have given the team a better chance against Punjab Kings. It's perplexing to pay INR 10 crore for Ashwin and then bench him. Despite others continuing despite poor performances, Ashwin was on the sidelines. He should have featured in the match against Punjab, as the track was conducive for spin," he added.
